When You Wake stands as a testament to the band’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of their sound. The track doesn’t merely continue their musical narrative but redefines it, encapsulating the emotional turbulence of abusive relationships in its haunting lyrics. Liv Howlett’s poignant reflections on past personal and friends experiences surface through this musical piece. She eloquently captures how a charismatic facade slowly uncovers its sinister nature.
Josh Kim’s reflection on the creation process highlights the intentional gravity of the song, “Amidst writing fun and energetic songs, I just wanted to create something deadlier.” This intention resonates through the dark, foreboding lead riff of the song, crafted in lower drop tunings. The result? A visceral portrayal of being engulfed by despair, fear, and a struggle for liberation—all elements of a psychological thriller, translated into music that’s impossible to ignore.
Forever At Midnight’s When You Wake invites listeners on a journey—not just through soundscapes, but through the depths of emotional complexity. Every note and lyric tells a profound story, elevating the trio to future icons within the broader spectrum of metal. Bursting with the potential for both new listeners and avid fans alike, their music illustrates that metalcore is not just about intensity—it’s about storytelling and innovation.
