secret knock opens with its longest song. That is an unusual decision, and it sets the terms early. The album Steve Haley released on 24 October 2025 begins with close to six minutes of slide guitar and slow, deliberate phrasing. No chorus arrives for a long while. Eleven tracks later, the Sackville songwriter has emptied out a decade of writing he had never shown anyone.

Steve Haley Opens the Album With Its Longest and Slowest Song
Most songwriters lead with the catchiest thing they have. secret knock does the opposite. The title track runs close to six minutes and moves at a deliberate pace. It leans on slide guitar and backing vocals, building something closer to a hymn than an opener. It works, because it sets the terms before you can expect anything else.
Those terms are unusually personal. The eleven tracks gather songs written across a decade or more and never released. The subjects follow from that: mortality, restlessness, faith, longing, and the ordinary machinery of domestic life. Nothing here chases a deadline, and it shows in how little the album strains for effect.
The gap matters too. Haley’s previous record, Heat Vision, came out in 2017. Several quiet years followed before this one arrived. He kept playing throughout, including as part of the band Blue Horse. Even so, secret knock is the first time in eight years that his solo writing has surfaced in one place.
Harmonium, Harmonica and a Wide Palette of Acoustic and Electric Instruments
For a record so often called sparse, secret knock carries a surprising amount of colour. The instrumentation shifts track to track rather than settling into one folk template. Better still, the choices are specific enough to notice.
Dark Soul arrives at the midpoint. It opens on an unexpectedly upbeat acoustic guitar figure, then hands its chorus to what sounds like a harmonium. That detail sits so naturally in the arrangement that it takes a second listen to identify. When I Die and Hard To Put a Finger On move the other way entirely. Both are minimal and lo-fi, carried by harmonica and not much else.
Haley produced the album with James Anderson, and the production logic stays consistent. The vocal sits dry and forward. The instruments carry the space around it. On a record where the words do the heavy lifting, that ordering is the whole argument. It is also why the album holds up across three-quarters of an hour.
Jason Molina and Jackson C. Frank Are the Right Reference Points Here
Two names come up quickly with this record. Both are earned rather than decorative.
Jason Molina, through Songs: Ohia and after, made slow, devotional-sounding records. Slide guitar and a plain vocal carried more weight there than any amount of arrangement could. The opening of secret knock sits squarely in that tradition, and the resemblance returns in the verses of Dark Soul.
Jackson C. Frank is the other. He surfaces on When I Die, where a melancholic melody carries a lyric about the end of things with no dramatisation at all. Frank’s catalogue is small and unadorned. Haley shares that willingness to leave a song at its natural size.
Meanwhile, the record has drawn attention beyond the region. Motel Void reviewed it in December, calling it “a richly textured and thoughtfully arranged folk album”. CHILLFILTR picked up Dark Soul, describing a glimpse into “the active mind of a lifelong creative”. CBC News profiled him earlier in his career. The Placentia-born songwriter had settled in Sackville by then, and called the town a “perfect junction”.
