VostokSounds Delivers a Captivating Collection of Art Rock and Electronic Soundscapes
VostokSounds, the vision of a skilled composer, arranger, and producer, offers his latest creation, Frameworks, an original 4-track EP released on 29 November 2024. This instrumental music compilation deftly combines elements of progressive rock, ambient electronic, and trip hop, highlighting VostokSounds’ distinctive artistic approach.
The EP, a product of the quiet time during lockdown, allowed the artist to experiment with fresh concepts, culminating in these four individual pieces. We invite you to activate the accompanying audio player below to immerse yourself in the sound journey that is Frameworks, and continue with our article for more insights into this notable release.
The Frameworks EP stands out as a purely instrumental offering, resisting a single style, with each of its four tracks presenting downtempo instrumental music with a slightly varied sound. VostokSounds, who composed, arranged, and produced all tracks, also performed all guitar and synth parts and managed the programming. Much of the recording took place in his home studio, using production techniques honed during his time as a studio engineer.
His former sound engineering teacher, Alex Burak, contributed upright bass to “Framework #1,” while Matt Copson played bass guitar on other tracks, bringing a rock funk feel to “Framework #3.” This careful crafting of soundscapes is clear throughout the EP, and we encourage you to listen to our curated instrumental rock playlist to discover more artists pushing similar creative edges.

Unpacking the Influences and Unique Compositional Threads Within Frameworks
The influences woven into Frameworks are diverse and engaging, reflecting VostokSounds’ rich musical background. Progressive rock, particularly groups like Pink Floyd, strongly shaped the build-up in “Framework #2,” with its sustained, extended minor chord and evolving guitar and synth layers.
The EP also features a clear connection to 80s pop with syncopated keys, rhythm parts, and horn sections in “Framework #3,” though some listeners have noted an early King Crimson atmosphere in the trumpet lead. Instrumental and ambient works from the 1980s, focusing on mix effects, were a consistent inspiration, especially noticeable in the expansive sound of “Framework #1” and the trip hop leanings of “Framework #4.” Brian Eno and Peter Gabriel’s electronic works from the 80s also provided strong ideas.

When considering the composition, the sequential numbering of each piece as a ‘Framework’ connects to the initial idea of this music accompanying visual art. Even though they are in different keys and very distinct styles, a subtle, descending minor triad motif links all four pieces, becoming apparent only with careful listening. This thoughtful design lifts Frameworks beyond a simple collection of tracks, inviting listeners to uncover its hidden connections.
The opening piece, “Framework #1,” is a semi-improvised, almost neo-classical creation with a sparse, ambient style, contrasting sharply with the art rock tendencies of other tracks, especially “Framework #4,” which concludes the EP’s journey with dark, trip hop electronica and varied guitar textures.
“VostokSounds’ Frameworks EP demonstrates the artist’s impressive command of instrumental music, effortlessly blending different genres into a unified and engaging sonic experience. This release confirms VostokSounds’ standing as an artist with a deep understanding of atmosphere and emotional depth.” — PopHits.Co Music Curator Team.

The creation of Frameworks was significantly shaped by the stillness of the Covid pandemic lockdown, which gave VostokSounds the chance to try out new ideas. The drive to complete these four pieces came from a chance meeting with a visual artist, sparking the original concept of audio-visual art—a digital journey of paintings made to music. Although their schedules converged, the music eventually existed independently. This background adds another layer to the EP, showing its beginnings in a period of global contemplation and artistic adaptation.
For those who enjoy instrumental rock and electronic music, VostokSounds’ Frameworks provides a refreshing and skillfully produced listening experience. His careful attention to detail and ability to combine seemingly different genres into a cohesive whole is truly commendable. Artists such as Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky come to mind when thinking about the broad appeal and atmospheric depth of VostokSounds’ work, offering a similarly evocative and immersive sound journey. The EP shows a clear grasp of space and texture, making it a valuable addition to any music enthusiast’s collection of instrumental music.
VostokSounds has developed a sound often described as ‘cinematic’. While this quality might not always suit every musical setting, as the artist humorously mentioned when auditioning for a local guitar band, it is precisely this cinematic aspect that makes Frameworks so compelling.

The ability to create a visual mood through sound is a defining feature of truly engaging instrumental music, and VostokSounds excels here. The mix of progressive rock, ambient electronic, and trip hop elements forms a rich tapestry of sound, perfect for focused listening or as a background for reflection or creative tasks.
